Common Video Advertising Questions for PPC Teams

Common video advertising questions for PPC teams, from YouTube formats and bidding to view measurement, ad serving, attribution, and optimization.

What to take away

  • A video format name does not define the complete viewing experience.
  • VAST carries ad metadata to a player, while SSAI changes where some events and signals originate.
  • Preserve the vendor's exact metric definition before comparing results.

Common video advertising questions become manageable when the team separates creative, player, inventory, transaction, measurement, and business evidence. A technical specification on video advertising can describe an interface. It cannot establish that a particular viewer paid attention or that the campaign created profit.

In paid media, most video buying now happens inside PPC platforms: YouTube and Demand Gen campaigns in Google Ads, Performance Max placements, and app and CTV inventory bought from the same account. There, keyword and audience targeting, the bid strategy (Target CPA or Target ROAS), and creative rotation decide whether the views a video reports turn into conversions or revenue. The questions below are the ones that separate a video report from an optimization decision.

Which YouTube video formats should a PPC team choose?

YouTube video ad formats include skippable in-stream, non-skippable in-stream, bumper, in-feed video, and Shorts ads. Skippable in-stream can support viewing and response goals; in-feed video lets viewers choose to watch; bumper and non-skippable ads suit brief, controlled exposure; and Shorts calls for vertical-first creative. Choose based on the campaign objective and eligible inventory, not completion rate alone.

How do Video campaigns differ from Demand Gen?

Google Ads Video campaigns are video-focused, while Demand Gen can use video and image assets across visual Google surfaces, including YouTube. Performance Max can include video as part of broader cross-channel delivery rather than a video-only buy. Compare the available inventory, controls, and optimization goal in the account before choosing a campaign type.

What should a PPC video ad brief include?

Provide the asset’s duration, aspect ratio, and resolution, plus landscape, square, or vertical versions suited to the intended placements. Include captions, a call to action, and the destination URL, then check the current Google Ads asset specifications for the selected format and campaign before trafficking.

Which video metrics support an optimization decision?

View rate, also called view-through rate or VTR, is reported views divided by impressions for the same reporting scope. Check how the campaign and format define an eligible view before comparing rates. A view-through conversion is attributed after an ad exposure without an ad click under the applicable conversion settings; treat it as an attribution result, not proof that the ad caused the conversion.

What is VAST?

IAB Tech Lab's page for the Video Ad Serving Template describes an XML-based structure that transfers ad metadata from an ad server to a video player. Its version history includes updates for verification, creative measurement, SSAI, audio, CTV, and attribution. For a PPC buyer, confirm that the ad server, verification partner, and player support the same VAST version and fields, and record them before comparing delivery or playback reports.

Video Ad Questions to Ask

  • Who initiated playback?
  • Can the ad be skipped?
  • Which controls exist?
  • Is the player visible?
  • Who reports starts and quartiles?
  • How are duplicate events filtered?
QuestionWorking answerEvidence needed
Is every video ad in-stream?No. Video can appear in-stream, out-stream, feeds, Shorts, CTV, pause, rewarded, and other contextsPlatform, format, player, placement, and delivered sample
What is a view?A vendor-defined event that varies by formatExact definition, threshold, billing, report, and date
Is completion attention? No. It indicates a defined playback statePresence, viewability, attention method, and outcome
Can sound be assumed? No. Initiation and sound state varyContext tests, captions, mix, and silent meaning
Is CTV the same as linear TV?No. Buying, apps, devices, identity, delivery, and measurement can differPublisher, app, device, deal, pod, household, and method

For PPC video creative, accessibility belongs in the asset check alongside placement fit. WCAG 2.2 lists Captions (Prerecorded) at Level A and Audio Description (Prerecorded) at Level AA.

Ask who initiated playback, whether the ad can be skipped, which controls exist, whether the player is visible, which party reports starts and quartiles, and how duplicate or invalid events are filtered. The answer may differ by browser, app, device, seller, or integration.

Platform is part of the answer. An in-feed video on YouTube, an app placement on Roku, an Amazon Fire TV ad, and a web out-stream unit each hand the player different controls and report different events. Independent vendors such as Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify add their own viewability and invalid-traffic lens on top of what the seller reports, so the same completion rate rarely means the same thing twice.

What changes with server-side insertion?

IAB Tech Lab's SSAI VAST Macros Guidance explains selected player macros can pass user-agent, app, environment, and content details useful to buyers and verification partners in SSAI contexts. It also names macros such as CONTENTID, APPSITEID, and DEVICEUA and notes practical constraints.

A macro's availability does not prove accurate population or complete verification. Even with good macros, the credit rule you apply to each event shapes what the numbers mean.

Documentation Checklist for Video Answers

  • Name platform, market, device, inventory, format, period
  • Distinguish delivery, playback, opportunity, attention, outcome
  • Show count and denominator for every rate
  • State client, server, panel, modeled, third-party sources
  • Include rights, accessibility, customer, claim limits
  • End with the decision the answer can support

Avoid collapsing all video into one row. A six-second non-skippable impression and a chosen two-minute watch are not equivalent exposures. Keep each format's behavior and business job visible before aggregating finance or reach.

What about VPAID and viewability measurement?

VPAID, the IAB's Video Player-Ad Interface Definition, was the long-standing way to run interactive and verification scripts inside a player, and it still turns up in older tags even though IAB Tech Lab now steers buyers to the Open Measurement SDK. The SDK gives verification vendors one integration for viewability and related signals across web, app, and CTV players, which is why a current tag often carries VAST for delivery and the SDK for measurement.

Scale still depends on who signs off on the number. The Media Rating Council publishes viewability standards and accredits measurement vendors, so compare a viewability figure only with one that uses the same standard on the same platform. When two vendors disagree, log which SDK version, app, and device produced each figure before you decide one of them is wrong.

Who owns the ad stack, the data, and the reports?

Media, ad serving, measurement, and production usually sit in separate contracts. The buyer often pays the media bill, while the publisher or platform controls the ad server, player, and server-side insertion. That split can limit access to event logs and raw signals.

Control follows the contract. Ask who owns the ad server account, the creative files, the event data, the first-party data, and the report definitions. Ask for retention and deletion terms, plus audit rights. Without those terms, a buyer may rent access to results rather than own the evidence.

Resolve the question with a decision record

For a PPC decision, define the evaluation question and evidence needed before changing bids or creative. The GAO evaluation design guide connects evaluation questions with evidence needs and design choices, but federal guidance does not make a local marketing result causal or transferable.

An answer names the decision owner, eligible population, evidence period, method, and action, and says what the result cannot establish. Save the definition and date with it.

If the same question returns, compare the records before changing the metric. That step exposes a changed population or source instead of treating every difference as new behavior. Teams that keep a decision record can compare paid media strategy questions against the same evidence period.

Common questions

Does VAST serve the video itself?

VAST structures information used in delivery between ad systems and players; inspect the implemented media files, wrappers, redirects, and player behavior.

Are quartile events standardized outcomes?

They describe playback progress under a method, not attention, persuasion, qualification, or business value.

Can SSAI eliminate buffering?

It can change delivery behavior, but test the actual stream, device, network, player, tracking, and failure conditions.

Do these answers change how a PPC team bids?

Bids should match the campaign objective. With CPV bidding, you pay for video views and other video interactions, such as clicks on the calls-to-action overlay, cards, and companion banners; target CPV lets you set an average amount you are willing to pay for a view when setting up a Video views campaign, as Google Ads CPV guidance explains. Use view rate, completion, viewability, and attributed conversions to diagnose performance, then change bids, placement exclusions, or creative only when the decision record supports that action.
